The origins of lacquering

Furniture lacquering is a type of treatment with very ancient origins. It was imported from China and guarantees the surface a better appearance.

It consists in the application of a transparent or coloured paint - according to tastes and needs - onto wooden objects, making them long-lasting, resistant, and bright.

Our company, in San Cesareo, is able to ensure the success of this type of treatment thanks to the use of highly advanced equipment: please do not hesitate to contact our office for more information.

  • History of Lacquering

Furniture lacquering was imported into Europe in the 17th century by the ancient Chinese civilisation. In that period, local artisans set about researching the composition of the lacquers used by the Chinese people in order to imitate them.

Lacquered and decorated furniture quickly became the symbol of the wealthy class. Furniture lacquering is also used to make a piece of furniture that has already been painted look as good as new. The lacquer can be dispensed automatically through special nozzles, which can also apply different colours.

There exist water-based or dry lacquer booths, the most commonly used method. Furniture lacquering is done manually by artisans using spray guns and is used for areas of the furniture that are more difficult to treat, such as edges and legs. Afterwards, the furniture is dried, which is a delicate phase that can take up to a whole day.

Some examples of furniture lacquering

In the first phase of furniture lacquering, it is necessary to wet sand the bottom well, stucco it - if necessary - removing all imperfections and paint.

Once the base has been prepared, an enamel is applied to the cabinet, which is then wet sanded again. Subsequently, we move on to patination and decide which type of paint to use.

Our company, in San Cesareo, in the province of Rome, offers different types of furniture lacquering: glossy, matt, or open-pore lacquering. There also exist anti-scratch lacquering and lacquering with antique, gilded, silver finishes.
